Joshua Rist’s setting of Roger Weaver’s poem “Sky Flier” for unaccompanied SATB chorus divisi is a beautiful work. The mostly homophonic setting reveals a composer that has a great sensitivity to text. Joshua is also not afraid to simply rest in the luxury of moments of sonic beauty. The divisi sections are all handled by expert voice leading, so they are easily accomplished. The work is an excellent selection for high school or university ensemble.
